What dimensional weight is
Carriers charge for the space a package takes up as well as what it weighs. Dimensional weight converts volume into a billable weight so a large, light box is not shipped for the price of a small one.
The formula
Multiply length by width by height in inches, then divide by the DIM divisor your carrier uses. You are billed on whichever is greater, the dimensional weight or the actual weight.
Which divisor should I use
It varies by carrier, by service and by contract, and it changes over time. Check your rate agreement rather than assuming a number. Common published divisors sit between 139 and 166 for domestic parcel.

Dimensional weight applies to parcel shipments. Palletised LTL freight is rated on density and freight class instead, which the freight class calculator works out.
